School Direct

Why apply for School Direct with us?

Caludon Castle School is a newly designated Teaching School. It is the lead school in the Coventry East Alliance. Applying for a School Direct place through us will guarantee an exceptional teacher training experience, either at Caludon or at one of our other successful partner schools.

Caludon Castle is an outstanding school (Ofsted March 2008; November 2011: outstanding in every category), with an excellent record of teacher training: in 2014-2015, we trained approximately 25 potential teachers, through both the PGCE and School Direct routes. Most of our School Direct trainees achieved a grade 1 (outstanding) by the end of their training year.

Our main partner provider: the University of Warwick, has recently started grading their schools’ provision, and we have been confirmed once again as ‘outstanding’.

'outstanding training provision for all GTP and PGCE trainees, ... some of the best feedback to trainees that we have ever seen. The mentor practice is to match those of the very best.' Warwick University Ofsted

We, also, work in partnership with universities offering the PGCE route into teaching.

Our Alliance schools are experienced in hosting training teachers, and successful candidates will be able to enjoy the best of all of the schools, as we share and celebrate each other's good practice.  Across the Alliance, the vast majority of our trainees achieved grade 1 (outstanding) by the end of their training year.  The others achieved a grade 2 (good).  We are, understandably, delighted with those results.

Successful School Direct candidates will complete their Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE11-18) with the University of Warwick, allowing them to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as well as gaining 90 CATs points towards their Masters. Practical, school-based training will take place at the lead school and within the east Coventry group. School Direct will involve candidates being supported in and engaged with the schools from the beginning of September 2015, developing relevant professional skills and learning from the wealth of experience that exists both within the schools and the university. High quality support will be available at all times from the schools and the university to help candidates on their journey towards becoming outstanding classroom practitioners. At the end of the training year, there is an expectation that schools will do all that they can to assist the training teacher with securing a teaching position.

We offer School Direct placements across most subject areas. 'The feedback on placements is very positive, providing excellent training experiences for the trainees' the Director of Teacher Education at Warwick University. Trainees are supported by experienced mentors.

Trainees, also, experience a comprehensive Professional Studies Induction Programme to help them fulfil the Core Teaching Standards. Many ‘Alliance Days’ take place at Caludon Castle and our partner schools.

The programme includes: child protection, safeguarding and all aspects of inclusion, behaviour for success and learning and teaching.

School Direct programmes contain a core Professional Studies element and a series of Subject Studies sessions designed for your chosen specialism.  Some of these take place at the placement schools: Subject Hubs of Excellence, and some at the University of Warwick.

Trainees then take what they have learned in the training room directly into the classroom where they put it into practice under the supervision and guidance of mentors and fellow colleagues who will provide support, feedback and key guidance to ensure that all trainees make the required progress. Professional Studies sessions, based at Caludon Castle School, are facilitated by leading practitioners who have a track record of excellence in teaching.  Topics covered include:

Understanding learning

Behaviour for learning

Outstanding lesson planning

Using ICT to enhance learning and teaching

Literacy and numeracy

Questioning techniques

Differentiation
